We have lived here at the Angus in Carlisle for the last 14 years, welcoming business and leisure guests to our guesthouse since 2004. We both moved from the North East to set up our dream business of running our own bed and breakfast. Martin is the expert in the kitchen – a qualified chef with thirty years’ experience so you know you can be guaranteed of a quality breakfast to set you up for the day. Rachel is usually found in reception and serving your breakfast and helps with all your holiday and travel requirements to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. We are proud to have built up a reputation for providing comfortable, relaxed accommodation which offers a homely base for visiting Carlisle and the surrounding area.
Since the beginning we have made continuous improvements to the hotel, refurbishing each room to provide modern, comfortable facilities yet retaining many of the building’s original features.
The Angus was built in 1855 originally as 2 large Victorian houses one of which used to be a chemist shop. The two properties were merged together in the 1970’s and the chemist shop (now our restaurant) is where you will enjoy your freshly prepared breakfast. The building’s foundations date back to Roman times as this area used to be a Roman fort housing 1000 cavalry so we literally have our foundations on Hadrian’s Wall. For those cycling or walking the Hadrian Wall route you can therefore claim you’ve slept on it too! The building may go back far in history but with continuous investment and refurbishment, the bedrooms and public areas are fit for the 21st Century giving guests access to modern facilities including free Wi-Fi; flat screen tv’s and mini-fridges.
If you are looking for somewhere to stay in Carlisle that has warmth, character and history then look no further than The Angus.
